It’s not until recently that I have realised how much I love scouting out new places to try. Not only do I enjoy working with and supporting local businesses, but there is always something a little bit more exciting and special about independently run businesses. Especially when it comes to food and drink and Cardiff’s new cocktail bar The Bootlegger is no exception.
Their family run business started back in 2014 with their first bar in Bristol and has since expanded to Womanby Street in Cardiff’s city centre. From entering through the small street door outside into something as big as Aladdin’s cave you’re instantly taken in by the bar’s 1920’s speakeasy and prohibition-era theme. I absolutely loved the raw interior and low lighting; making it the perfect place to relax and catch up with friends over a drink or two.
With over 100 cocktails to choose from and it’s own dedicated gin bar you will not be disappointed! There is everything you can imagine; from a fruity Mr Lover Lover to a Jaffa Cake Espresso Martini. I chose a Blueberry Mojito and it was one of the best cocktails I have had in a long time. It had so much flavour and the presentation was just amazing. There is something about pretty cocktails that instantly make me think of celebrations and I am sure you can see from these exactly why.
On top of the fantastic drinks, there is also a great atmosphere with live music and different events going on throughout the week, not to mention the happy hour promotions! There is plenty of seating if you want to sit back and enjoy your drinks as well as plenty of room to take part in their swing dancing classes that are starting soon. Both the owner and the bar staff were really friendly, welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us; especially when it came to finding us all the perfect drink.
If you are looking for somewhere new to try this weekend or even if you want to set yourself a challenge to make it through the 107 cocktails on the menu (not all in one night of course) then The Bootlegger is the place to go.
