As we are now in autumn, I feel like it’s a good time to rearrange and clear out my wardrobe, seen as my summer clothes are of no use to me with this weather … not that they were much use in the summer either, but there we go that’s British weather for you.
For those that know me well, they know that I am obsessed with a good wardrobe detox and I am ridiculously ruthless. I find it so therapeutic to clear out all the old things that are a bit tatty, the bits that no longer get worn or those that don’t fit and have a bit of a fresh start.
I would like to think I am someone who has quite a lot of experience in wardrobe cleansing … we are talking at least 6 times a year if not more. With that in mind I thought I would share with you my wardrobe detox process in 4 easy steps.
Step 1 – Mentally prepare yourself
This bit isn’t hard for me at all because I love clearing my wardrobe out, but I know others hate parting with things. So I would definitely recommend starting when your in the right frame of mind and ready to have a good sort out.
Step 2 – The purge
Ok so like I said for most this can be the hardest part, but I absolutely love it. I am not sentimental at all, I’m more along the lines of completely ruthless – If it’s no good – it goes.
Now is the time to look at the selection in the wardrobe and decide whether the items
I use these 5 questions to help me quickly decide what stays and what goes. If they are going, I normally have a pile for the bin and a pile for my sisters to look through; anything they are not fussed on then goes to the charity shop.
Step 3 – Clean up
Once all the clothes are out of the wardrobe/drawers I like to give them a quick hoover and clean before everything goes back it. I then like to make sure everything is folded or hung properly before putting it back in the wardrobe. Now you get to choose how to organise the stuff you have left. I normally group mine into work clothes, every-day clothes and occasional pieces/going out clothes.
Step 4 – Plan
As much as I love clearing everything out, this is definitely my favourite part. I like to plan out some new outfit ideas, especially this time of the year as we move into a different season and my outfit choices change completely. Like I mentioned before, I also like to look at what I need to buy to match certain pieces in my collection or plan out what I need to replace.
I cannot recommend detoxing your wardrobe enough; its extremely therapeutic and definitely gives you a sense of organisation. Plus it maximises your wardrobe and making sure that you get to use all the different pieces you have. I also find that when I go shopping I know what I need or would like rather than buying random clothes on impulse.
Brill post! I’m very much if it’s not been worn in the last 12 months then I’m not going to wear it! I normally regret it a few weeks later!
Thats definitely a good way to do it, although I have had that happen to me a few times too! lol x
I do love a good closet detox! I do one about 5 to 6 times per year (my friends think I am crazy). But I swear the more I do the better I feel each time! I think you offered some amazing tips! It definitely inspired me to do a bit of a closet detox again before it’s winter time! I love your outfit in this photo too by the way! Your sandals are super cute!

I’m still in the process of doing this. Great post xx
Thank you! I already feel like I want to do mine again x
I clear out my wardrobe at least twice a year but I’m never strict enough with myself and therefore never get rid of enough when I know I could be getting rid of a lot more. I’m definitely going to try these tips and hopefully have a much better clear out!
