How often do you day dream about disappearing off to the Maldives or the Carribean, just to get away from the chaos of life for 2 weeks?

My answer?

At least daily!

I am always longing for a holiday just, so I can escape the 9-5 grind, endless masters assignments, not having to clean my house and just the madness that everyday life brings.

As 2017 came to an end, I really wanted to change my outlook on life and think about why I always felt like this, because let’s be honest it’s not the greatest feeling in the world. I quickly came to the conclusion that it’s normally my own fault. I don’t always give myself the break that I need, self care is never at the top of my priority list and with no surprise it leads to me feeling burnt out and run down.

I decided that moving forward I will be changing my priorities, with my wellbeing and happiness being right at the top of the list. I started thinking about the best way to tackle things and deciding what I was going to change. I soon realised that we don’t always need 2 weeks in the sun to feel re-charged. Instead we just need to give ourselves a chance to slow down and recover.

So what happens when we crave that 2 week holiday in the sun, but it’s out of reach?

How about a 24 hour getaway or overnight break instead?

Just before Christmas, we were lucky enough to escape to the Oxwich Bay Hotel for an overnight stay and I couldn’t have been more excited. Although the hotel is only just over an hour from my house (or hour and a half from Cardiff) it’s in what seems like the middle of nowhere. This was my ideal opportunity to relax and I fully intended on making the most of it.

By taking 24 hours to look after yourself and getaway, you can let yourself feel recharged, refreshed, inspired and ready to take on any daily struggles and here’s how:

Switch Off

My first tip would be to switch off from your phone and social media. As inspiring as social media can be, it can also be very draining and chaotic. We have to get over our fear of missing out and give ourselves a chance to have a little iPhone/social media detox. Instead the time can be used talking and catching up with those you are with, or maybe reading that book which you have been meaning to start for weeks. I took some of my time to get creative. Giving myself time away from social media let me feel more inspired than I had in weeks, maybe even months. So, I wrote it all down and made lots of notes to bring home with me.

Go Outside

There is nothing better when you are feeling run down than getting out in the fresh air. I love to go for a walk to clear my head. It really helps me get rid of any brain fog, refocus and prioritise what needs doing.

Look After your Body

When we feel tired, run down and lacking in energy, it’s normally our body telling us that we need to slow down. So take the time to catch up on your sleep; letting your body get some rest. Whether it’s getting an early night or turning off your alarm – give your body a chance to have exactly what it needs.

Eat plenty of good food. Eat your favourite things, but also fill up on lots of healthy and energy boosting food too. Whilst we were at the Oxwich Bay Hotel we were lucky enough to eat at their restaurant which was absolutely lovely and I would definitely recommend. I have a post about that here if you would like to see what delicious food we had.

The Getaway

The getaway location isn’t important, but dedicating 24 hours to yourself is. I personally like to explore new places, but maybe you love to go back to your favourite places. Either way it certainly doesn’t need to be on the other side of the world. Our overnight stay at the Oxwich Bay Hotel was the perfect example of that, with it being so close to home. I came back feeling so much better; my mindset had shifted, I had more energy and I was full of inspiration.

Oxwich Bay Hotel

If you live locally or if you are looking for somewhere to escape to in South Wales then the Oxwich Bay Hotel is definitely somewhere to consider. The hotel itself is just stepping distance from Oxwich beach, surrounded by countryside and perfect for walking or just escaping your phone signal. They have a selection places of stay including their sea view rooms, cottages and their new self-contained pods in the ‘Secret Garden’. We were lucky enough to be in the bridal suite, which had beautiful panoramic windows looking out over the Oxwich bay. Their beautiful restaurant means you have amazing food on your doorstep and you can relax in their cosy lounge area with a cuppa by the fire when you want to escape the cold for a little bit.

Have you ever taken 24 hours to getaway and recharge your batteries or would you like to?  I’d love to hear from you so please leave me a comment below!

Thank you, I completely agree. It is so easy to get caught up in the chaos of day to day life, but sometimes 24 hours is all it takes to relax and feel so much better.
