What is one of your favourite ways to spend time with your friends, partner or family? I personally love to eat (no surprises there); whether it’s cooking up a storm and eating together at home or going out to eat. Either option gives you a great chance to have a good chat, catch up on all the latest gossip and really enjoy spending time together. Of course, eating out has the added benefit of no washing up too, so it’s usually a winner for me. If you have followed me for a little while, you will know that I absolutely love finding somewhere new to eat and just before Christmas we were lucky enough to spend the evening eating at the Oxwich Bay Hotel restaurant*.

First Impressions

After a blustery afternoon walking along on the beach, we were greeted with a warm and cosy restaurant with crackling open fires; giant wooden beams and a subtle touch of the local surroundings that can be found right on their doorstep. We were given a lovely spot to sit and we both delved straight into the extensive menu. As per normal I took quite a lot of time picking out the perfect options.

The Menu

We both chose the soup of the day to start, which happened to be leek and potato. Although this is one of my favourite soups, it can be known for being a little bland sometimes. However, it did not disappoint! It was definitely a hearty winter warmer, with a distinct creamy texture and absolutely full of flavour. The selection of warm bread it was served with also went down very well.

Their menu has quite the array of options from various meats, game and fish. It incorporates a great mix of classic dishes, each with their own little unique twist; from the pretzel bun on their beef burger to their game sausages and mash. If you are looking for something completely different, then there are dishes such as the guinea fowl breast or the shredded vegetable & pine nut strudel. I chose the chargrilled chicken with vegetables and proper chips and Ryan had chargrilled salmon, vegetables and potatoes. Once you have settled on your main, there are numerous sides to choose from; some of my favourites being the truffle & parmesan proper chips, bubble & squeak or the parmentier potatoes.

If you haven’t been won over just yet, I am sure the dessert and sweet treat menu would be enough to tempt anyone. After almost being defeated by our mains we settled on a dessert to share – the chocolate oreo salted caramel torte, which was incredible! I like to think of myself as quite the dessert connoisseur, with my exquisite sweet tooth and love for all things chocolate and I am very happy to confirm that this was quite possibly one of the best desserts I have eaten (and if I am honest, I have eaten quite a few in my 27 years).

The Verdict

The restaurant was so much more than I expected. I thought the meal would be nice, however I didn’t realise just how much we were going to enjoy it! The portions were plentiful and each dish was full of flavour. Also, if you have any concerns about dietary requirements they are more than happy to adapt the meals to suit your needs. All dishes can be made gluten free and vegan versions are available too. The staff were incredibly accommodating, friendly and willing to help.
