Essentials for a Strong & Healthy Relationship

relationship

Relationships are not something I have really ever talked about on my blog before, but as we are celebrating our anniversary this week I thought it was a good time to start. I have spent the past few weeks thinking about how far we have come, how things have changed and what we have achieved. I can happily say that over these past five years I feel I have learnt what a happy and healthy relationship is. I am by no means a relationship expert, but I wanted to share what I’ve learnt.

Laugh and laugh lots!

I think laughing is key to every relationship. I have been lucky enough to find someone that I can laugh with all the time. Someone that puts a smile on my face every day.

Say exactly what you mean

I think Ryan and I are both known for this and it’s probably why we work so well together. We are honest with each other and say exactly what we are thinking or feeling. There is nothing better than feeling completely comfortable with someone and knowing that you can say what’s on your mind at any time. He is my best friend and I love being able to tell him anything.

Have ‘me’ time

I feel it’s so important to have your own time in a relationship, to do your own thing, have your own hobby and fulfill your own goals. I think it’s also really important to realise that it’s completely ok to be together and do your own thing. There are numerous times when I might be writing a blog post and Ryan may be reading and we sit in silence for a while. Although we may be doing our own things, it’s still nice to know that he is right there.

Spend quality time together

The busier our lifestyles have got the more we have realised that spending quality time together is essential. Time that we can spend together doing things that we both love and enjoy. It’s nice to ignore my phone, go exploring somewhere new and chat all day.

Love them for them

Let’s just put it out there – I am definitely not perfect and just like everyone else I have good parts, flaws, quirkiness and goodness knows what else, but I am loved unconditionally for me. I wouldn’t be me without my strengths and weaknesses, my sense of humour and sarcasm, my flaws and insecurities and it’s nice to know that someone loves you for all of that put together.

Like I said, I am no relationship expert. What works for some relationships may not be the same in others and that’s totally normal, but these are 5 things that I feel every relationship needs.
