Birchbox: First Impressions & Review After 3 Boxes

Beauty subscription boxes are becoming more and more popular with both monthly and quarterly subscriptions available. Although with so many on the market to choose from, it’s hard to know which ones to invest in. Subscription boxes are not something I have really bought in the past, so I thought I would just pick one at random and put it to the test. When I saw that Birchbox had a really good deal on during the Black Friday sale, I figured they would be the perfect place to start.

Birchbox is one of the biggest brands that springs to mind when I think of beauty subscription services, so I was excited to see what it was all about. I was fortunate enough to get two boxes in December with the offer I had and then I also paid for one additional box; so, three boxes in total. I personally think one box is not really enough to give a good review of the service, so once I had received my third, I thought I would be able to share a better overview of exactly what I thought.

What is Birchbox?

For anyone who has not heard of Birchbox before, it is a subscription service where you can have a selection of beauty products sent straight to your door each month. You don’t get to pick your products; however, it is a personalised selection based on answers to a little questionnaire that you answer when you sign up.

How much does Birchbox cost?

The cost of the box seems fairly comparable to other subscription services. Each one is £10 a month, plus postage of £2.95 to have no ties and allowing you to cancel at any time. There is also a 6-monthly or annual subscription too, which give you a few extra benefits. The website is really easy to use, super simple to sign up and the delivery is reasonably quick (normally first week of the month). The only thing that I think lets the delivery service down is that the box does not fit through your letter box. This may be quite normal for beauty subscription services and as I haven’t really had any I am not sure on the sizes of other options (so this could be completely normal). However, it did mean that I either needed to be home to collect the package, take a visit to the post office or say a big thank you if there was a nice neighbour home that day. Not too much of a game changer, but something to consider.

What products do you get?

Each month you receive a selection of 5 beauty products. They are a mixture of sample and travel sizes with the occasional full-size product. The selection of products is a good mixture of makeup, skincare, haircare, body care and accessories. I have been saving some of mine for my hospital bag or weekends away (in case you didn’t know, we are expecting our first baby – you can catch up with that here). We have a little baby moon coming up, so having mini versions are perfect to pop in my suitcase. As I said before they are personalised to your taste and you can see the possible selection of items on the website each month. On top of your beauty goodies each month there are a few other benefits too. All subscribes get 10% off full sized sample products and if you are a VIP member then you get 15% off all products on their site.

Would I re-purchase Birchbox?

To keep it simple – yes, I would (however, not until I have tried some other options first). I love the concept, it’s a great way to try new products from brands you haven’t tried before or even try out a more expensive product to see if you like it before splashing out on the full-size version. However, I would like to see how other beauty subscription boxes compare before I decide if I want to stick with one on a monthly basis.

Have you tried Birchbox before or would you like to try it? I would love to hear what you think, so please leave me a comment below.
