Gousto Box – First Impressions & Is It Worth the Money?

A few weeks ago we decided to do something wild and sign up for our first Gousto box (we are parents now, this is as wild as it gets some days – don’t judge). We have got stuck in a rut with our meals again and trying to meal plan with a baby and a partner working shifts just seems to be a nightmare. We started to notice our food waste was getting a bit ridiculous again (one of my biggest pet peeves), so we decided it was time for change. I suggested we sign up for a Gousto box and see how we got on. Four meals for £14 what could go wrong? I’m not going to lie, I was fully prepared to use it just for convenience for a few weeks as I assumed that’s all it would be for, but we were quite surprised.

How do you sign up?

I signed up on the Gousto website in a matter of minutes. All I had to do was click a few buttons telling them how many people I needed meals for and where I needed my box delivered. Then came the fun part of picking the recipes. There were 40 recipes to choose from and from what I can understand these change on a weekly basis. There was a mixture of 10 minute meals to dinners that took a little longer. Not only did they have something different for us to try like the things from their global kitchen or bistro range, but there were also lots of ‘everyday favourites’ such as cottage pie, lasagne and spaghetti bolognese.

Delivery Service

The delivery service runs from 8am to 7pm daily in our area and was free of charge. The contents in the box was adequately packaged so that it can be left on your doorstep (or a safe place) whilst you are out. So, it doesn’t matter if you have popped to the shops or if you are out at work all day.

What is in the box?

The box contains two sections; one filled with all of the cold ingredients and the other with the fresh things, seasonings and what I like to consider cupboard bits like pasta etc. There is the exact amount of each of the ingredients for each meal too, meaning that there is no food wastage at all, plus you don’t end up spending lots of money on random ingredients that you might only use for one meal – another pet peeve of mine. Something else that I liked was that the packaging was recyclable too.

What are the meals like?

For our first box we chose mild chicken curry, one-pot creamy chicken and spinach orzo, feel good fish n’ chips and herby pork and egg burger with crispy potatoes. I thought this was a good variety of meals for the week and we were really impressed. I am not going to lie, when the box came I excitedly opened it and took all the ingredients out and instantly thought, there is no way thats going to feed both of us and that I was going to be starving. I definitely jumped the gun on that one – the meals were such a good size and filled me up (even with my massive appetite).

Each meal was so easy to make with step by step instructions (with photos) and they didn’t take too long either. The food was perfectly seasoned, full of flavour and I would definitely order each of them again! I think the curry and burger were my favourite.

First Impressions

Like I said, I definitely thought that we would order a Gousto box and that it would be great for convenience and that would be that. However, we really enjoyed it a lot more than we thought! It was so nice to have different meals we don’t normally eat, have no food waste and the added convenience of having it all delivered straight to the door. We enjoyed it so much that we have since received our second box and our third one is due to be delivered soon.
